Sexist superbowl ad.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8F_cHT4DvQ

The video above was a commercial originally intended to air during the Superbowl, but was cut because it was too controversial. Although it never appeared on TV, it did demonstrate a negative view of women. In the commercial the man is watching foot ball, while his wife is cleaning the house around him. The wife complains about having to do all the housework herself and this annoys the man. He's just trying to watch his sports. The woman is than replaced by an attractive, scarcely dressed woman who bring the man what he wants and that will not disturb him.

This commercial says many things. It says that a man's desire to watch football is more important than him doing any share of the housework. And that women are only useful when they are prevocatively dressed, and submissive. All in all this sends the message that men are the dominant sex, and that women are supposed to server men.

I find this extremely offensive to women. Not only does it bring up the gender role of the woman doing all of the house work while the man watches TV, but this is not even good enough for the man! The woman has to be completely submissive and cannot interupt his sport watching. I find the fact that anyone would think like this to be shocking. I don't think men are entitled to anything more than women.

What do you think this commercial says about society, and what impact would it have if it was released?

  1. I'm glad they didn't air this commercial during the Super Bowl. It was poorly constructed and it makes me ashamed to watch football. In my opinion, it seems that corporations think that men like the one in the commercial are the stereotypical/ average football fan. This is an insulting portrayal of men. I agree that this commercial is an insult to women too. It's apparent that many people still view women as housewives. Some men need to get off the couch and help out in the household. Our society needs to get rid of this ludicrous notion that women belong in the house.

  2. What I find funny is that the "hot" women at the end of the ad are still blocking the TV.

  3. @Ms. Draper: I find that funny too. But maybe the man in the video would be ok with that because he may think those women are worth watching - more than the game itself.

I think this commercial demonstrates the order of what men find interesting:

Nagging wives < sports games < "Hot" women.

  5. I agree with terry, and that it was a good thing they didn’t air this commercial ad. It portrays men as useless in house work and chores. All they do is just sit down, with a beer bottle and enjoy watching TV. Not every male is like that, there are many men out their whom actually help around the house. It also portrays the females poorly too. the society we live in still think that females are suppose to be house wife’s and they should stick to that. I wouldn’t think there would be a big impact on us after watching this commercial it self.
