The Title of our Blog

Hey everyone,

Just in case you were wondering, the title of our blog comes from a Lily Allen song called "The Fear."  The line goes: "I am a weapon of massive consumption, but it's not my fault; it's how I'm programed to function."  If you are interested, take a look at the song and give me some feedback about the lyrics as they relate to the terms we've studied during the media unit.

That's the link the music video if anyone was interested in watching and listening to it.

Wow Ms.Draper, I would've never thought that's where the name of the blog came from. I love Lily Allen, and this song was sort of like her way of letting the media, her fans and everyone else that she is human, and that being portrayed in the limelight can be difficult. She dealt with drug and alcohol issues, and I also believe she had an eating disorder or problem. She was constantly scrutinized for being underweight or perhaps even "overweight" when in reality, she was a healthy woman.
I realize how those lyrics, the name of the blog and significance of the name all relate to this unit and the terms we've discussed. There are certain stereotypes in you are a female musician, and she certainly did not fit a lot of them, because she was so unique. She was praised for being different yes, but she was also shunned and it really affected her emotionally.
I really find this to be extremely interesting, I love how you tied Lily Allen's comeback lyrics into our media unit. :P

  2. I haven't listened to the song, but based on the lyrics alone, I think Lily Allen is very original by incorporating norms that the media perpetuates on society into a form of media (songs).

I think that she talks about how the media has changed the way humanity views life and what the norms are, "Life's about film stars and less about mothers". I think she is also talking about how we can't help but consume the media because it has become a way of life (facebook, youtube, movies, advertisements).

  3. Wow this is a really interesting song. When I first read the title I really didn’t get the impression of Lily Allen signing. Although I must say it’s a unique song, and she sings it beautifully. Her lyrics are interesting, actually quite blunt. She’s really upfront about the media and everything she is witnessing which is a good way of conveying a message. “I don’t know what’s right and what’s real anymore I don’t know how I’m meant to feel anymore.” That is a very deep line, perhaps the one that stands out the most to me. To me it sounds like the media, the world and it’s assumptions, actions, simply everything has taken over to the point where she has no idea what her own personal morals are. It’s like the media is slowly deciding what we should believe, how we should act, and simply just how we portray every little things. “When do you think it will all become clear ‘cuz I’m being taken over by The Fear.” Again another powerful line and my response to that is it’s up to us as viewers to clear things up. That we take in everything that is happening in the world and let people decide what is socially accepted and what is not. I really enjoyed this media unit, it’s helped us all think so much more critically and not even necessarily in a negative sense, in a sense that we get to be the ones who decide what is right and wrong, not the media. We have the capability and intelligence as humans to observe right and wrong, and to give into our own perceptions over ones that are mean to be made for us. Very interesting song!

  4. “It’s how I’m programmed to function” – That says EVERYTHING we’ve all been trying to say! Damn, don’t you wish there was a course for songwriting too xD ?
Lily Allen perfectly sums up what the condition of today’s generation is. We are all influenced and conditioned by all the media that we consume on a daily basis. All of the dominant discourse about various subjects ‘programs’ all of us to be on the same wavelength. This is seen in the lines “everything’s cool as long as I’m getting thinner” and “I’ll take my clothes off, and it will be shameless, coz everyone knows that’s how you get famous”. She gives explicit examples of what the media makes us believe, and it amazed me at her talent for picking up these things and expressing them so beautifully.
OH MY GOD. Four minutes to the close of the blog. All in all, this took time to catch on, but it was possibly one of the BEST assignments I’ve ever had. It’s like a crazily extended round-table discussion that kept shifting topics! :D
