So easy, a man can do it

This advert is for an over cleaner; Oven Pride. It features a man acting like a child, using the product. Meanwhile a pregnant woman stands by glaring angrily at him. The tagline of the ad is, "Oven Pride, so easy a man can do it". And, there is even a note at the end, saying, "No men were harmed during the making of this commercial".

I found that the ad was sexist, offensive, and demeaning to both genders. The advertisement suggests that men are too stupid to clean, and that cleaning is woman's job. Cleaning the oven or cleaning in general, is not a complex task, and can be done by either gender. The ad stereotypes women as typical housewives who take care of the house, and men as the dumb, incapable spouse. This advertisement isn't the only piece of media that stereotypes men and women like this. These stereotypes are very popular and common in the media.

In The Simpsons, Homer (On the couch) is lazy and very stupid, and Marge (Vacuuming) is the typical housewife, in charge of cleaning the house.

Now, there are families across the globe, in which the women is the sole breadwinner of the family, and the man stays home and takes care of the house and children. But, women, in a household, are expected to clean and take care of the children without the help of their husbands, who are expected to get a job and provide for the family financially.

In my opinion, between the two roles, neither is superior. In my own family, both my parents have jobs, and although my father has helped clean, primarily my mother is the one in charge of maintaining the house.

That's just my opinion, what's yours?

Questions:

I. What did you think about the advertisement?

II. Do you think these stereotypes are true? false?

III. Between the two roles of the spouses, do you think one is superior? If so, which one, and why?

  1. 1.I think that this ad is poking fun at men's inability to do housework more than calling them stupid. If anything this is more offensive to woman because it implies that woman are the only ones who know how to clean (because they are the only ones who do it).

    2. I think that in general, women do more housework than men, and thus know more about it. This isn't true for every couple, and is not how things have to be.

    3. As long a both spouses put the same amount of work into what they do, working a job and taking care of the house are equally important.

  2. The video is overlaping the buttons on the left for me and I cannot see the picture which is also overlapping...
1)I think the advertisement shown in the video is absurd. The people in it were cheesy but it is kind of funny watching how they act (they are overdoing it)

2)I think these stereotypes of men not knowing how to do the chores are ridicules. I actually think a high percentage of men know how to do house chores.

3)Well, between the two typical gender roles of the spouses, I think the one who makes the money are the one more superior because they have the power to buy things or do anything that requires money. In some relationships, the spouses both share their money together and I think this is the best way to do it. I do not think one person in a relationship have to be superior, they can be equal in power.

  3. 1) I think that the advertisement was probably the worst advertisement I have seen in my life. This is because of the fact that through the use of derogatory stereotypes the advertisement actually alienates what could be its potential customers. Now the commercial presented two main stereotypes. The first being that the male is incapable of doing any of the housework because of the fact that he lacks the intelligence to do so. Now the second is that wives are the ones who normally do all the clean, thus will know how to do so. The problem with the first stereotype is that it, in a sense, is fuel to the second stereotype. It gives men an excuse to act selfish and be inconsiderate and not help to clean the house, though when in reality, they are fully capable.

2)Obviously people will continue to claim these stereotypes but statistics show that a greater percentage of women are joining the work force then in the past. This gives us the idea that these stereotypes are a image of the past, and are ultimately just like the past, going to change. More men have also adopted the job of taking care of the child and house in todays society than what used to be, though in my opinion, that should be a split effort by both the wife and the husband. In regards to the stereotype that a male is incapable of doing housework, I believe that this is simply an excuse created to allow males to be lazy. Any person is capable of doing housework.

    3) There should be no role to which is superior but according to the commercial it seemed that the wife was superior, this was only because of the lack of intelligence shown on the males behalf. Though in reality both the wife and husband must give a group effort in order to make the household a good one. When one is under stress the other should help. There are no superior roles.

  5. 1. I think that this ad is actually funny. The reaction of the mans face as he is doing the housework made me laugh. It brought some humor and realization to me, as it shows how lazy men are.
    2. I actually think that the stereotype of women doing more housework than men is true. Most guys think that doing housework is "girly" and the man should be watching tv and eating, because he makes the money.
    3. Well i believe the role of the wife is more superior. In some cases, when the wife has a job and comes home to work, it shows that she is working harder. Though she may be making less money than the husband she is working twice as hard. This shows that women are superior in that scenario. But overall i think that women are more superior as they cook and clean everyday of the week.

  6. Personally, i sort of see this as a joke, it's an advertisement created in order to have a good laugh and to have fun. However, it is true that if one pays more attention to it and tries to comprehend the reasons behind the genders acting that way, then yes, it could be really offensive. It is clear that this product was targeted for women to use. I'm not being sexist here but it seems that the tagline "So easy that your man can do it" is solely addressing females. It is specifically targeted towards women who I'm guessing a) spend a lot of time cleaning and b) don't get much help from their husbands/boyfriends, etc. This is completely omitting the fact that there are men who actually help their partners and who actually care about dividing the workload equally. I don't think those guys would see this advertisement as funny but rather as offensive and i think that would make them become slightly of a misogynist, for that short moment.

Those stereotypes depicted are obviously false. Nowadays, as I'm sure we all know, males do help, maybe not the majority of men but it is not as worse as it was many years ago. The situation is improving now, it is being more equal and fair. Nowadays, I believe that before committing themselves to a relationship, women would actually make sure that their partners would contribute in doing housework. It is simply not realistic anymore to think that women should be staying at home and doing all the work for they also have ambitions and careers to think about.

Hum...do you mean in the video or in real life? If you are asking about the video, it is obviously the female. She clearly seems to have finally found something simple enough for her partner to understand how to use, for it is implied that men are usually lazy-couch potatoes and never really care about the needs of others. This reinforces the stereotype as to how men are insensitive, selfish and have a short-attention span.

  7. 1. I would like to say that this ad is definitely offensive to both genders. Cleaning is not a hard job at all and can be done by anyone. But, at the same time it's funny because it's pretty obvious that a man can do that job .

    2. The stereotypes mentioned here are obviously very false. Males do help but it all comes down to women who do more work . Men should actually contribute more .

    3. In the video , it's undoubtedly the female who is the dominant gender. She is standing there as a boss and making the husband do the work.

  8. 1. I think that this ad is degrading men saying that they are children when it comes to cleaning and that oven pride is easy enough for them to use.
    2. I don’t think that this stereotype is true because I know many couples in which the man splits the house work with his wife and personally I think that the man should take as much responsibility as his wife when it comes to cleaning and shouldn’t leave the work for her.
    3. I personal think that they are both equal in a relationship because in there own ways they are both contributing in the relationship either by working or cleaning.

  9. 1) I think the advertisement is really childish! It’s not even funny, I don’t if some people found it funny but I was more freaked out than entertained. I agree with Aimpreet completely honestly it’s giving a really bad message that men in incapable of doing a simple task of cleaning and how woman are just the nagging ones. The fact that the woman was pregnant in the back looked even worse. It’s like giving an image that woman just clean, are always angry, and pregnant, as if it’s a bad thing. That’s horrible, having a baby can be really special, I don’t see why that was added, completely unnecessary! The man just looks ridiculous as if he’s never even touched soap in his life. It shows how men are completely ignorant when it comes to cleaning and if they can clean this oven, than anyone can do it. I highly disagree because I know and see a lot of men who can cook and clean better than woman. It’s seriously not a battle, and I feel like this advertisement is encouraging that it is one. Neither genders need to be superior to the other; I completely agree with Aimpreet that the house work should be dived. Of course one partner may do more than others, but that’s up to the couple to decide.
    2) They are true, that’s probably why the commercial was made. The people making the commercial probably thought that because these stereotypes are so common that it may appear entertaining to people. Of course a situation like this does certainly not apply to all female and males, but sadly in some situations they do. I really liked Jon’s point on how this is becoming simply an excuse for men to be lazy, and also would like to add an excuse for woman to be so harsh on men! There is no need for this, in my opinion both should be helping out each other when it comes to the housework.
    3) Nope, not at all I don’t think one is superior to the other. Of course there are things men can do better and woman can do better because of their own physical and mental abilities but that certainly does not make one better than the other. Instead I feel that 2 people should put there differences together and work as a team. Sadly in this commercial clearly the male was the inferior one and the female was superior, but this should not be. There’s no need for superior roles, it’s extremely unhealthy for any relationship.

  10. I believe that his advertisement is using an explicit example to promote the cleaning product to the viewers .It is basically stating that the product is so easy and efficient to use that even man (who do not engage in cleaning) can do it. This is a straight ahead stereotype. It suggests that Cleaning is meant to be solely women’s’ job and men who try to do it are seen as unable, odd or have no idea how to without a woman’s supervision as shown in the video. To me, this is very absurd because not all chores are considered tasks for women, and men can actually help their loved ones clean, cook and perform other duties at home when needed.

  11. @Ryan - I resized the video and changed the layout of the picture, I hope they are now visible.

I'm glad that that all of you agree with me, that this ad is horribly produced, and offends both genders. All of you made interesting points and I'm glad that you don't agree with these stereotypes.

Many of you think the two roles presented are equal in reality, and I agree. I think that the two roles require the assistance of each other, without one, the other cannot do it's job properly, which makes them equal to one another.

I thought the ad was a little humorous, but largely, it was very sexist. The stereotypes are very evident in the ad, and it comes off as very sexist to the viewers. I cannot see the logic behind creating this ad, and I cannot understand why they thought this would be a good idea.

I also discovered that Oven Pride produced a sequel to this ad, for another one of their products; Shower and Bath pride. (I was genuinely shocked)

This ad is just as sexist and offensive and the first, and I was surprised the company did not learn from its mistakes.
