  1. This is my favourite commercial

What do you think about this commercial?

  2. Oh wow, that is a pretty interesting commercial. I really should start watching some more TV. I think this commercial is reflective of how powerful and influencing our media has become. Even I, not being very athletic, am inspired by the commercial. I think we can all agree it is the camera angle that makes it appear as if we ourselves are the ones in the situation. Every kid who plays football (or soccer, if you want to be American) dreams of making it big in the leagues and playing with or against players like Ronaldo (oh so cute!). This commercial makes it appear as if this is truly possible. Of course though, it also makes it appear as if wearing Nike is the first step to making it happen.
I think this is a great example of the media using the camera as a novel method of persuasion. And it sure is effective! Even I felt like buying a new set of Nike shoes and running around a football field!

Here's my problem with it though: Don't you guys think it gives people a false sense of reality, an impression that using/wearing Nike can actually improve your athletic skills?
In my opinion, it would sure boost the sales for Nike, but only through the creation of an illusion that will disappoint most people who fall for it.

  3. I agree with you Muskaan, I felt inspired by the commercial too. Answering your question, I agree that the commercial is not realistic, it is like a fantasy of every soccer fan. Even though i was very inspired by this Nike commercial, I still like to buy from Addidas because i like their design. It gave me an impression that it is possible for anyone to become a soccer star but not that wearing Nike will improve my atheletic skills. Maybe it is just me but I wasn't persuade to use Nike. Maybe my subconcscious wants me to buy Nike though. The commercial does persuade me to play soccer!

  4. Muskaan brings up a good point about the inspiring message this advertisement gives. I, being a Roger Federer fan, love wearing Nike products. Wearing it makes me feel good about it. Roger Federer is the brand ambassador of Nike tennis which is why I enjoy owning these products. I prefer Nike products, over Addidas because media has driven me towards Nike selections. Also, I think that the media chooses to display elements that can help them connect with their audience. As Federer has a huge fan following, using him to endorse the product has contributed towards it's success.

  5. How do you think Nike would be doing if they did not make any advertisement at all?

  6. As much as I agree with Muskaan about how inspiring this advertisement is, I have to say that it hurts my eyes. It seems like a home-made video to me. Yes I know that it’s suppose to make you feel like you’re the one playing, but that truly doesn’t work with me. It just seems like the camera was attached to one of the players’ forehead and told him to go around.
Answering to Muskaan’s question, yes I do believe that this advertisement is giving people a false impression of the reality. The shoes are just there to give you comfort – not skills. If a person like me was to buy these shoes, they really wouldn’t make any improvements to my soccer skills (which are really bad). Yes of course they would give me comfort but not skills.
These types of advertisements are surely giving Nike a boost, but at the same time, it might be also letting several different people down. I mean, by watching these commercials everyone thinks that after buying these shoes i would be able to play as well as Ronaldo. But let’s face the truth, it isn’t going to happen. Imagining Nike without any commercial will be very odd. Obviously Nike wouldn’t be going on such a hike, but it will still be doing better than several other shoe brands which aren’t as famous as Nike and Addidas.

It is funny how there are only males playing soccer in the commercials. They make it seem like females don’t play soccer at all which I believe is not true. What do you guys think about this?

  7. Replying to Kavleen,
I believe females do play soccer or any other sports
The Women Canadian team is actually really good, they are way better than the Canadian Men in ranks. The Men Canadian Team couldn't even make the world cup.
It is just that more males are interest in sports than women.

  8. Ryan, I really liked your link because I play soccer and wear Nike clothes. For example my bag and shoes are Nike brand and personally this video made me smile.
Muskaan, in some cases, the shoes that the athlete wears can make them better. In my personal opinion, the most comfortable shoes are the ones I best perform in and ironically those cleats are made by Nike. For example if Nike cleats are comfortable, than the athlete will perform better in the Nike cleats rather than the uncomfortable Puma or Addidas ones. So in my personal experience, I believe that Nike shoes can improve your abilities.

Kavleen regarding your question, I agree with Ryan completely about women playing soccer and males are more interested in sports. As well men are more likely to buy the product being endorsed by their favorite athletes because they look up to them. When I watch a commercial that has my favourite athlete endorsing it, than I would want to get the product.

The question I want to ask is, how affective is the use of celebrities/athletes endorsing products? Does it want you to buy the product more knowing that your favourite celebrity/athlete is in the commercial?

  9. Gagan, I am glad that you liked my link :D
Answering your questions, I think it is a very effective way for a celebrity athlete to endorse products. Like you said, people look up to them and you yourself would want to get that product. For myself, I wouldn't buy a product solely because my favourite celebrity is promoting the product in a commercial. I would like to watch the commercial and I would probably enjoy the commercial but I would try my best ability to restrain myself into buying product. Even though I will try to not be affected by the advertisement, I might buy the product if it is something that I really want.

btw, good job being at net today

  10. Reply to Kavleen,
I watched the video again in FULLSCREEN, and I found the video to hurt my eyes too. My only suggestion to others is to try to watch it in a small screen. Aaaaw, I am dizzy now....

  11. Ryan, I like your link :). They used celebrities for Nike. I'm not a soccer fan but it's encouraging soccer fans to buy Nike products. They will get benefit because the way they showed the celebrities their fans are going to follow them like as Ramit said he likes to follow Roger Federer and he likes to buy all those things that Roger Federer generally uses for his tennis match.

  12. Muskaan, isn't that the point?
If Nike had a fat person sitting on a bench and then the bench broke and then the name 'Nike' displayed it wouldn't exactly get the shoes sold. Get what I mean?

The shoe being marketed in this particular nike ad is the Nike Total 90 Laser II (cleats). This is the lifestyle that is associated with being a soccer player (which you are if you want to buy soccer shoes O_O). You have to train and practise in order to get better; in that, this commercial is accurate. If you notice, the guy doesn't get better just by wearing the shoes. He gets better by practising. It's a very inspirational message. It captured the good (the scoring), the bad (the falling) and the ugly (the barfing. Yuck!). It's not selling an idea that is completely unacheivable so I'm going to have to give it a big thumbs up!

    @ Kavleen,
Nike makes shoes for both males and females. This shoe was specifically designed to fit the foot shape of most men and so that was the target audience for this commercial. This ad is not implying that only men play soccer. There are female nike soccer shoes as well and nike has made commercials to promote the women's soccer team. Take a look,

  13. I totally agree with you, Sadaf, you got to train and practise in order to get better which can apply to anything. In this case, it is about a lifestyle of a soccer player. The soccer shoes can be like a symbol of inspiration and a reminder to the person to continue their dreams and love for soccer. It doesn't necessary have to be about the shoe physically giving the person a boost in skills. Btw, how did you know the ad was on the Nike Total 90 Laser ii cleats.

Yes, there are a lot of female Nike commercials too and it is a pretty big market target for Nike.

  14. Oh, if you look carfully in the video, all the shoes belong to that collection.

  15. Going back to what Ryan asked me, what would happen if Nike did not make any ads at all, I think that it would have been an entirely different story. Their success rate over the recent few years has quite possibly been because of the media. I don't think that Nike would have achieved big numbers if they did not produce any ads. To be honest, media has really played an amazing part in bringing big companies to a level quite unimaginable.

I completely agree with what Gagan said. His opinion about the Nike products which makes him feel comfortable is quite acceptable. Answering his questions, I would agree with the fact that it is quite effective for an athlete to endorse products. It just makes you feel good when you know that you are wearing something that is worn by your favorite athlete. I don't know if it's just me or everyone, but honestly, it would be very useful.

  16. @Sadaf, the video you linked there and the video that Ryan posted, don't you see a tiny bit of difference there? I mean in the video that Ryan posted, men are doing anything they want to do. They are actually on their own will. They video that you linked there, their "PR manager" happens to be ordering the women on what to do and what not to do. Moreover, the women are just doing it without opposing it. Don't you think that it's a bit weird that the difference between the two advertisements, sort of depict the stereotypes between men and women? That being, that the man can doing whatever he feels like and female are to be bossed around by a man?

P.S. were they trying to advertise shoes in the advertisement or what? lol

  17. @Kavleen
I agree with you that the commercial actually makes fun of women and that they are being bossed around by a PR manager. They had to wear a mask for "more exposure" or something and they had to ride some donkey. It gave me a impression that female soccer team is inferior.

    ReplyDelete
  18. @Kavleen; The commercial was to promote awareness of the women's soccer team. I posted it because you said nike is making it seem like women don't play soccer, which is not the case at all because the video I posted is all about the women's soccer team.

You guys are looking at it from a completely different angle than mine.

The women never take that guy seriously, infact the commerical is depicting him as a little bit of an insane jerk. And that was the point of the advertisement. Nike wants to show people that these women know what they're doing and that they can make it on their own.

The camera angle at the end of the video is angled up towards them making them appear like something great. The commercial was created to fight the stereotype that exist of the women's soccer team through humor. I thought it was quite clear.

  19. @ Sadaf
Now that you pointed it out, I have to say that you’re right. And you were right when you said that we were, or at least I was looking from a different point of view. Well, I actually did find it funny on how crazy the man can go, I just chose decided to interpret it in a different way than you did.

Answering Gagan’s question, I do feel that the use of celebrities and or athletes endorsing a products effects it is sale. Obviously, it would matter who the celebrity is. If it were someone like Paris Hilton, I wouldn’t buy it E.V.E.R. (sorry but she just disgusts me). On the other hand, if it were some one like Ronaldo, it would probably be a plus point for me if I consider that buying.

  20. I love Nike commercials, especially the soccer ones. You know i consider soccer more like a philosophy of life instead of a sport. Every single person who plays soccer feels naturally challenged to reach the professional level, you know the speed the skills and the goal is something that you can't compare to any other emotion. And putting it in a direct view with the field just simply allows every soccer fun to imagine him as the guy. Of course with Nike shoes. Although a career in the professional sports is quite hard they train every single day of their life until they retire, and if you are the kind of person that plays soccer for a game and not a career this might not be as effective. And besides you have to live under a strict diet and you cannot really have a proper personal life or be in a relationship while playing professional sports, because you are never home(P.S. all professional players are married but i don't really think they spend quality time with the family).

  21. I love the commercial and I must say that this commercial is quite similar to the Roger Federer one - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVfCiTxD3Dk. It is very interesting how they display all the aspects of a soccer player through a player's lens (the first-person camera angle). The lens gives the common man/woman hope to become an athlete. The commercial also implies that buying Nike products initiates their transformation into an athlete. Nike would benefit from the fact that more people would start consuming their products. Nevertheless, as Muskaan mentioned, most people would be disappointed to realize that buying Nike products would not get them anywhere realistically. Funny thing is I started buying Nike shoes after coming to know that Roger Federer, I am a huge fan of his tennis, endorses Nike products. I observe that Nike always makes commercials where various athletes are playing their "game"; suffice to say that their tagline is, "Just do it". This motivates people for sure as I am motivated by some of their commercials.
