Kims - No Kims no Joy

Here is a commercial of two different stereotype groups.
I think one group is the typical straight group (or cool group) where they eat junk foods like chips which the commercial is trying to sell KiMs chips
The other group is the typical gay groups who eats vegetable where one of the guy makes a gesture that is stereotype to be feminist.
I actually found the commercial funny, I was laughing at the part where the first group started screaming when they see the vegetables.
Well, I laugh at things very easily though.

Questions:
1)What was your first reaction from watching the video?
2)What do you think about the two different groups in the commercial? (Compare them)
3)Do you think one group is necessary better than the other group?
4)Which group do you think you belong to? (You can say neither)

  1. Hey Ryan =D,

I must admit I did smile a little during the commercial. [I just find screaming at inanimate things hilarious!] The stereotypes were; straight men like chips, homosexuals do not. Although whose to say that the vegetable receiving couple weren't homosexual as well? They are two men living together as well!

    Let's take a look at how these stereotypes were developed;
    - the 'straight' guy shoved his chips into a bad whereas the stereotypical gay man was more careful
    - if you notice their housing, the 'straight' guys were messy whereas the stereotypical gay men had a kitchen that was spic and span (don't know if that's how you spell it :P)
    - the most obvious difference was in their screams, the 'straight' men had louder booming voices compared to the shrill squeals the stereotypical gay men had.

I feel that this commercial may offend many homosexuals as it seems like the marketers do not want homosexuals eating these chips O_O I mean, the 'gay' people in the video thought the KiMs were disgusting. It's kinda sending this message; "Don't be gay. Eat these chips." or "Only gay people don't eat these chips!". The food choices one makes does not reflect one's sexuality!

And to answer your questions Ryan, of course no group is better than the other. They're just different. There's no need to label them with worse or better. This is going back to Hitler's ideaology that there exists a superior group of people. If we start doing that, who knows where our generation will end up. We should accept all people as they come ^^

  2. I have to admit I did laugh after watching the commercial, but at the end I was irritated at how pathetic advertisers can be. To me this commercial doesn't make sense, and doesn't convince people to buy KiMs at all. It’s pretty pathetic that advertisers have to use stereotypes about gay men to try selling a bag of chips... Honestly, how many people will go out and buy KiMs just to prove that they're not gay?

Homosexual men are clean and healthy eaters. Therefore, if you are messy and eat junk food, you are heterosexual, logic fallacy here?

And of course, none of the groups are better than each other. In fact, both groups are unrealistic. How many heterosexuals would start screaming at the sight of vegetables and how many homosexuals would scream at the sight of junk food? I don’t understand how food is related to sexual orientation. This commercial is not effective and has no direct connection to the product it is trying to sell. And I’ll go even further by saying that those who are convinced specifically by this commercial to go and buy KiMs need to re-evaluate their logic. In fact, I would not buy KiMs because I would be indirectly supporting the very annoying and repetitive stereotypes about gay men. And I know you might say, “Relax, it’s just a bag of chips.” But that’s exactly my point. Why is a bag of chips being used to differentiate between homosexuals and heterosexuals? Its funny how this commercial has very little to do with the product its actually selling.

  4. Ryan, I actually laughed after watching the commercial. It reminded me of another video that i saw before, and I began laughing more.

The comparison that is being shown in the commercial is that Homosexual males are the healthy and are concerned about their food intake. While the other group is straight males that eat junk food and don't care about their health and food intake.

I believe that no group is better than the other. In a perfect world, everyone is equal and everyone is the same as everyone else. The commercial can be interpreted in many ways, for example it could also show that homosexual men don't like KiM's chips and would rather eat healthy than eat the chips. Overall I found the commercial to be a little weird and awkward but it showed a comparison of homosexual males and straight males.

I dont think i belong in any group because, I dont care what i eat and i also eat vegetables as i am a vegetarian. Also, i don't scream when i see Chips as well, unless it is regular flavored chips, which i hate. LoL

  5. Of course, my first reaction to the commercial was to laugh to see how men can have such similar reactions to such different foods

But as Simmi rightly pointed out, the commercial in its entirety made me raise my eyebrows. How do the actual chips have anything to do with straight or gay men? Clearly, it is established by the producers of the commercial that their target audience is only heterosexual men.

I’d go as far to say that the KiMs brand is portraying themselves as being homophobic. The homosexual men have the KiMs chips but are still not happy, and the tagline of the brand is “No KiMs, No Joy”. I’d put two and two together to say that they think their chips are meant only for straight men.

The heterosexual man walks in and asks his friend if anything has happened yet, which with his hurry and the noise from the TV, we can safely assume is some sort of sports game. The homosexual men are dressed in tight clothes and have a visibly feminine body language. They clearly did quite a good job (yes, sarcasm) at reinforcing the stereotypes of heterosexuality vs. homosexuality.

And of course, for the media illiterate, who just consume these kinds of commercials without pausing to analyze them, it has a whole other consequence. The next time they see a guy eating a healthy salad for a meal, their first thought is going to be – “That’s gay.”

Of course no one group represented in the commercial is better than the other. They aren’t even represented properly, because the commercial has been created based on broad generalizations. I’d say we need some intelligent ad-makers who actually promote the item they’re trying to sell rather than using their commercials to share their closed-minded opinions.

  6. This commercial shows the two different stereotypes, which are homosexuals, and straight men. I found it a bit funny when the straight men were screaming as soon as they seen the vegetables in the bag. Other then that it was a pretty normal commercial. One group were homosexuals who pretty much like to be healthy and care about there health, but as to the straight guys they don’t really care what they eat and not care about there health concerns. Bit awkward when the homosexuals started to scream found it a bit weird. Both groups are different from each other but there two different one’s. No need to judge them and say who’s better but to accept it and going with your life. I don’t relate to neither groups.

  7. My original reaction was a partially mixed one. The commercial was funny but also very stereotypical of the homosexual and heterosexual versions of males. Now the length to which the stereotype went was quite sad actually. The commercial had portrayed the ideal version of a homosexual male as a very, very feminine based person. Shown by the way the heterosexual males were dressed, reacted to the undesired discovery, their movements, and also their screams. The homosexual males were dressed very differently, the male in green going as far as wearing a shirt that didn't cover his stomach. Their movements were also very different, shown when the homosexual males were holding the chip bags. lastly their screams were much higher, more resembling a female scream than a male scream. Now all these stereotypes are quite harmful to any viewer because by watching this the viewer solidifies a sort of unrealistic version of what a homosexual male is like and what a heterosexual male is like. In regards to the healthy life style, I would go as far as to call this commercial absurd in the sense to which they displayed the two male types. Life styles do not at all vary based on what your sexual orientation is. Rather they vary based on the individual and his perspective of healthy living is. Trying to compare the groups unfortunately cannot be done. This is because they are too unrealistic versions of homosexual and heterosexual males, and thus comparing them would be based simply on biases. Also trying to compare them based solely on what we saw would be an inaccurate comparison because of the fact that we were only able to see such shallow sides of both of these groups. In regards to which group I belong to, well, I have to say that I like chips, but I also eat healthy, thus I cannot be in either of this groups seeing as they were so specific to their personalities.

  8. The commercial was so humorous but was a bit difficult to get the message being sent or what the advertisers were trying to inform it’s consumers about.
The advertisers were making a stereotypical comparison between an obesity person and a skinny person. The commercial displayed two groups of individuals. One was homosexual-in skinny clothing and twisting his hand around whenever he makes an expression while the other was heterosexual “straight”-dressed in normal clothing. The implicit message being sent here is that, gays are normally skinny due to their interest in vegetables (healthy foods) while hetero-sexual are most likely to choose oily foods than to eat vegetables which doesn’t taste delicious, appetizing etc. The advertisers are not really advertising their product but they are rather displaying the demerit of one group of individual; hetero-sexual group constantly buying their product. This has in turn made him chubby. I belong to none of the groups mentions because even though they both have an advantage, they also have a disadvantage. There is no argument in the video that makes a particular person superior from the other. The gay guy -homosexual is better than the hetero-sexual because people in society today are trying to be like the homosexual in terms of their appearance and healthy eating. The media is resisting from unpleasant meals that can lead them to being like the chubby man.

  9. 1)What was your first reaction from watching the video?
I'm going to have to agree with you that that is pretty funny! But, I don't really understand what the commercial is trying to sell to its audience.

2)What do you think about the two different groups in the commercial? (Compare them)
I think you have the two stereotypical straight men who are ready to watch some sort of sport while eating junk food because they're so masculine and macho that they could care less about their health and weight.
Then, you have the two stereotypical gay men who scream high pitched, expected to eat a healthy meal and were in a sense stylish.

3)Do you think one group is necessary better than the other group?
Not at all, while viewing the commercial I only saw them as roommates and nothing more. But that's just my personal view, others may interpret it in their own ways.

4)Which group do you think you belong to? (You can say neither)
I definatly do not belong in neither of these groups. I feel like if I was to be choosing a group I'd be stereotyping myself. Also, I like vegetables AND junk food! So I'd be torn if I really had to choose.
