Conan O'Brien

1. What did you think of the video/joke? Did you find it funny or rude and why?
2. Do you think Conan O'Brien's idea that Artistic people are "gay" is true?

  1. I found the joke to be okay, it wasn't really funny. It can be rude and unfair to the people who goes to a performing art school because people will get an impression that they are gay. I think most artistic people are not gay and it is just a stereotype. The two things are totally not related to each other. Being artistic doesn't make one person to be gay.

  2. I didn’t find the joke to be funny at all....it was actually quite lame... It’s just one of those stereotypes that are repeated over and over again that have no value…This joke implies that people who enroll into the performing arts typically possess feminine qualities, and therefore such a field is not a career choice for men who are heterosexual. This stereotype discourages heterosexual males who have a talent for the arts to enter the field because they will be labeled as being gay.

  3. And it also implies that men in business or politics are not gay. Well for those who didn't know, George Smitherman, a succesful former health minister and mayoral candidate is gay. He defies the stereotype that gay men are flamboyant and girly.

  4. How typical.
His joke, which by the way, I did not find very funny, is a hit at both homosexuals and artists. He is trying to say that "a gay-friendly school for gay people" is the same as "a performing arts school".
    So..
Is he saying that musicians, dancers etc. are gay?
Or is he saying that gay people are extremely artistic?
    I guess both.
Its just the same old stereotype regurgitated with a new punchline.
Like Simmi said, these jokes are the kind that influence the minds of the youth. This is why you hear guys saying "I can't major in Arts. That's gay". It deters heterosexual men from pursuing their talents because they are afraid of the effect on their reputation.

On the other hand: Newsflash. There are homosexual athletes, businessmen, doctors and all the other possible careers you can think of.
I think it is high time our society erased these stereotypes and started fresh.
    I just wonder how.

  5. To be honest the joke was a little funny but at the same time it's an attack on Homosexuals and artistic people. The matter of the fact is that alot of people must attack others to make a good joke. It's the truth if you watch any stand up comedy act of a great comedian you will almost 100% of the time see that comedian attack a group, culture, race, or something. It's rude because not all Homosexuals are sensitive and artistic, there could be athletes or business men that are like Muskaan said.

  6. The joke was funny but on the same time it is rude because it is making fun of both homosexuals and heterosexuals. He is basically saying that to be artistic you have to be gay which is not true at all. There are many artistic men and women who are not gay. But the idea of being gay for going into a specific field is true and we see it happening all the time around us for example if a guy becomes a nurse he is considered gay which is not true at all it depends on you what you want to become and other people should not judge you. So yes I think it is not right to call artistic people gay.

  7. No, I did not find the joke funny at all! I do believe that this video is putting out the stereotype about gay people being fond with art, and they are the only males on Earth that can become artists. As Muskaan mentioned that many guys don't want to have a bachelors in art as it is "gay". It is also believed that the act of painting, dancing, playing music is very feminine because you have to have a straight back, you have to make every move elegantly and these characteristics fit either a woman or a gay person. This keeps from males even getting close to art because then in the eyes of society they'll be considered gay as well. It is funny how gay people are always compared to females and how they act, walk, look, etc. There are many gay people out there in the world that don't show a feminine look and rather like to look like a male!

  8. 1) I think the joke is funny and harmless. Being artistic isn't a bad thing so it's not like Conan is putting them down.

    2) I believe that gay culture is centered more around the arts than heterosexual culture, and that more gay people may want to get into the arts because of this. I don't think that gay people are naturally more artistic though.

  9. The joke wasn't very rude, but it was still insulting to homosexuals and people attending a school of arts. The problem I have with the joke is that Conan O'Brien, a popular TV show host, is saying this joke aloud to his many viewers on TV. This causes the joke to have a great impact on the many people who are very impressionable.

I wouldn't say that every art student is homosexual, or that every homosexual is an art student, but I actually do think, if you were to verify this, statistically, the majority of homosexual people would have attended art school or are artistic. I don't think that this should be an insult to either homosexuals or artistic people.

  10. Okay honestly, it is not funny at all. He is generalising that all gay men are artists, or all artists are homosexuals, which is just simply wrong. There are only a few artists who are homosexuals, and only a few homosexuals which are artists. I honestly don’t find what’s funny here. He is comparing artists and artists and homosexuals and calling them alike, that is just unreasonable. Ne-yo, Eminem, Rihanna, Nikki Minaj are great artists but not homosexuals!

Like Simmi and Muskaan rightly said, these types of jokes influence the youth. Next thing you know, in the next few years only homosexual people come out in the media as artists. And others just hide back under the pressure of the society because artists are “gay”.

  11. 1. What did you think of the video/joke? Did you find it funny or rude and why?
I agree with Eric on this one. He didn't necessarily put them down but at the same time he did place a stereotype that was uncalled for.

    2. Do you think Conan O'Brien's idea that Artistic people are "gay" is true?
I don't think so, like a lot of the things that have been said above, they are stereotypes commonly said about gay people. When in reality, they're like everybody else. Being a certain sexuality does not limit your ability or job abilities.
