male vs female in social media

  1. I guess the men beat us on this one. In most jobs, especially higher up in the corporate ladder, most bosses are males. This may be partly the reason why women are less likely to become 'friends' with their bosses. Often in society it is seen that when a male associates with many females, people regard him as being socially successful or simply friendly. On the contrary, when women associate with many men, esp. men in power or authority, they are more likely to be libeled as being flirtatous or immodest. To avoid such a reputation, women may tend to avoid becoming friends with their (male)bosses or (male)co-workers in general.

Or...is it just that women are better at keeping their personal lives & interests out of their workplace and better at being proffesional in their proffesion? That's open to an argument.

  2. I agree with you Simmi, it is true that most bosses are males and females are at a disavantages. If we are going to have an equality between genders, we need to stop the stereotypical view of women making friends with male bosses. Females need to consider making friends with bosses and co-worders and having more social netwroking profile if they want to be more eqaul in power with men in the media.

  3. I also agree with Simmi about this stereotype. Another reason why men are more likely to befriend a boss or co-worker responsible is because men tend to be more competitive than women. Hence, they are friendlier towards responsible co-workers, their boss and others who will benefit them in the future. Even now days, when women are working they are still expected to come home at a specific time to take care and look after their household, children and family, whereas men do not have the same expectations. They do not have a curfew like most women do. They are usually the ones who come home late at night from “hard” work or sometimes do not even come at all because of their business trips etc. Also, Simmi pointed out how women are seen as being flirtatious or immodest when they associate with the opposite sex, whereas men are not. This stereotype can cause a lot of problems in a relationship. According to the Pepperdine University journal, men are more easily jealous about their partner communicating with the opposite sex compared to women. (http://jiv.sagepub.com/content/10/4/473.short). This may contribute to why women are not associating with a lot of co-workers and their boss. In addition, more men have jobs that involve lots of travelling, touring etc than women, which is why their connection is much higher. Lastly, many women do not go into such fields because they are often discouraged and are pushed towards careers that are more feminam such as teaching, nursing etc.

  4. I think this has to do with the way we are educated mostly. You know guys should be more spontaneous than girls and girls more reserved and not loud according to old fashion beliefs. Also we know that most bosses in different fields are men because of their interpersonal skills and ability to negotiate, because as we know we always see boys organizing teams and creating games in their childhood while for girls parents tend to give them a doll and recommended to them to be nice and sweet to everybody. And also and other reason of why girls are not that friendly in working places is because they might be already in a relationship and I don't think after past a age girls will still try to find new friends because of course they are taught to dedicate to only one guy, although is not the same for guys, they are taught to be free basically. And also as we know girls always look for older guys right which means they will most likely have a friendship in a work place if they already are in a relationship and it partially explains why women do not really go high up in the society, because they have another obligation such as family. While the guy, he is supposed to work all the time even if he has a family.
